About Us

Hi! We're Glasgow University Badminton Club (GUBC): a place for you to meet new people, learn and improve skills, or keep up with your fitness!

Whether it is your first time picking up a racquet or you are a professional player, GUBC offers opportunities and challenges for everyone!

Recreational

We offer several recreational sessions per week, which are open to all club members with all standards of play catered for in a friendly, sociable environment. UofG Sport also offers drop-in sessions where gym members can participate in a recreational set-up, dates and times of which are yet to be confirmed.

We run Recreational Tournaments twice per year, these are fun social doubles tournaments with a small entry fee which is used for fundraising or charity donations.

Our sessions are hosted at a variety of venues to increase ease of accessibility for as many members as possible.

Teams

The club has five mixed competitive teams, with the 5th team being a new addition as of 2026. Our teams have had great success in previous years, including winning the BUCS Trophy and Scottish Student Sport leagues.

All teams participate in the Scottish BUCS leagues each year. Each team selects around 12 players who have matches nearly every Saturday in the standard BUCS format. We play highly competitive games against other universities and participate in the Scottish University Championships and BUCS Individual Championships in Aberdeen and Sheffield, respectively.

GUBC has high expectations for our teams this coming year and we look forward to continuing to find other ways to allow as many players as possible to play in competitive games.

Each of our teams’ trains with a professional coach every week. These sessions are generally mandatory should an individual obtain a space on a competitive team through trials which run at the start of each semester.

We also have fundraising, alumni, and welfare socials. Last year, we had a popular Murder Mystery fundraiser socials. We also have group meals, craft nights, study breaks.

Insurance

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in.  Upon joining, please check the level of insurance cover we, as a club, provide to you.

GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered.  Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.
