Glasgow University Men's Basketball Club (GUMBC) provides an opportunity for people of all backgrounds and skill to compete, improve their fitness and meet new friends in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Teams
The First Team compete in BUCS 1, which involves playing competitively against other top universities across Scotland. They train twice a week, on Monday evenings and Friday evenings. Training provides an environment for more experienced players to compete, improve their basketball skills and fitness. Games are played on Wednesdays.
The Second Team compete in BUCS 2. The team trains twice a week, on Monday evenings and Friday mornings. Their games are played on Wednesdays.
The Third Team compete in BUCS 5. The team trains twice a week, on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Training with the third team often allows players to be promoted to higher teams in the future. Their games are played on Wednesdays.
The Chinese International Team compete in SLBA 2 throughout the year. They won the British Chinese Basketball League and brought home the Birmingham Cup last year! The team trains twice weekly in the Stevenson building, including on Thursday mornings.
All of our competitive teams have access to the excellent Strength & Conditioning facilities at the Stevenson building. There is also a S&C session every SUNDAY, 12-2pm at Studio 1, Stevenson Building!
The Recreational Team is open to all abilities, including those with little or no prior basketball experience. Sessions take place on Tuesday afternoons (3-5pm) in the Stevenson Building, allowing players to develop their fundamental skills and fitness. The sessions also provide a fantastic opportunity to socialise with new people and join the GUMBC community. Please ask to join the WhatsApp chat once you attend your first session to keep up to date with the sessions!
*NEW* Intramural League - are you interested in playing in a team all year round against other club members? Our new Intramural League (coming in October) offers the ability for rec-level players and those interested in playing for fun to be part of a team, that you remain in for the duration of the academic year. You will compete against other Intramural teams, and the winners of the League will be due some major prizes!
All club members wishing to improve their tabling skills, or be PAID to referee these games and gain more experience, can help run the Intramural League and be immersed in our rec culture. This is the ultimate stepping-stone between rec basketball and improving for a spot in a competitive team, or even just to gain a sense of what club basketball can be like at University!
Running from 5-8pm each Sunday at KELVINHALL!
SIGN UP on our website EACH WEEK to partake in this new League!
Other ways to get involved
TABLING AND REFEREEING
The club offers both table officiating and refereeing opportunities, which are great ways to learn more about the sport and meet new people.
If anyone still wants to train to become a referee, contact captain-mensbasketball@gusa.gla.ac.uk or our club Instagram before Fri 10th October to book a spot! Likewise, we will be hosting one more tabling course in SEMESTER ONE, and another in JANUARY for those wishing to help table, and have a front row ticket to our BUCS games!
RISING STARS
Since 2018 the club has been involved with the Rising Stars, a Charity founded by a founding member. This is a Social Outreach basketball programme with the Glasgow University Men & Women's basketball teams organising weekly basketball sessions for primary schools in Govan. There is also an opportunity to volunteer in these local schools to provide coaching sessions – https://risingstarsbasketball.co.uk/.
COME ALONG
You are also welcome along to our game days and show support to our teams! All the information on our home games at the Stevenson Building can be found on our Instagram page.
Socials
GUMBC hosts socials every Wednesday in conjunction with our friends at the Women’s Basketball Club. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and to get to know your teammates. As well as our regular socials, we hold bigger events. These range from Subcrawls, Ceilidhs, 3v3 tournaments and many more! Every year we host a Christmas Dinner, which is very popular, and an Alumni Weekend, inviting previous players for a few days of fun and an evening of food and celebration.
Training
Our first, second and third team train twice per week, with games on Wednesdays, whilst our International Team train twice per week, with games at the weekends.
