About Us

Glasgow University Women's Basketball Club (GUWBC) is a fun and proudly all-inclusive club, welcoming individuals of all abilities.

With a First, Second and Recreational team, there's a space for everyone at GUWBC – whether you've never picked up a basketball before or are an experienced player. Basketball is an excellent way to improve your fitness, gain new skills and meet new people.

First Team
The First Team is our highest-level competitive team, training twice a week and competing across BUCS Scottish Tier 1, the Scottish National BUCS Trophy, and the SLBA Senior Women’s League. The team is made up of our top-performing players and is supported by experienced coaches. The team enjoyed a strong 2025–26 season, finishing 2nd in BUCS Scottish Tier 1 and 4th in the SLBA Senior Women’s League.

First team players are provided with the following:

  • Coaching from experienced coaches
  • Two Team Training Sessions every week
  • Access to GU Strength and Condition Facilities
  • BUCS games on Wednesdays
  • SLBA league and cup games

Second Team
The Second Team is a competitive team competing in BUCS Scottish Tier 2 after a recent promotion. Training twice a week and playing a BUCS fixture every Wednesday, the team provides players with the opportunity to develop their skills while competing at a high level.

Second Team players are provided with:

  • Coaching from an experienced coach
  • Two Team Training Sessions a week
  • Access to GU Strength and Conditioning Facilities
  • BUCS games on Wednesday

Recreational Team

Our Recreational Team is open to all abilities, with the aim being to cater for those with little or no basketball experience. Our Recreational Team began in 2019 and has grown substantially since then, with a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Sessions run once a week and are led by our First Team and/or Second Team players who bring fun to the sessions while also teaching the fundamentals of basketball and improving fitness. This allows a fantastic chance to meet new people and socialise in a welcoming environment. In the 2026-27 we are also looking for opportunities for friendly games throughout the academic year.

International

In 2025-26, GUWBC also created a team composed of First and Second Team players to compete internationally in "Les Parisiennes" tournament in Paris where they placed 2nd. This opportunity allows players to experience playing basketball and representing the University at an international level, as well as explore a new city, in 2026-27 we look to return to Paris and are keen to explore further opportunities to compete in international tournaments.

In 2023-24 we hosted an International Tournament with teams from The Netherlands, Spain as well as local teams. This is a tournament we hope to recreate in the 2026-27 season, in conjunction with the Men’s Club.

Outreach

In 2026-27, GUWBC is aiming to continue to expand its Social Outreach initiatives. We will be continuing to work with the Rising Stars Charity, a charity which serves to better the lives of young people in less affluent areas using basketball as a tool to do so. Our volunteers work in local schools providing regular basketball coaching sessions throughout the academic year. More information about Rising Stars Charity can be found at https://risingstarsbasketball.co.uk/.

Socials

GUWBC holds socials every Wednesday in conjunction with the Men's Basketball Club. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and to get to know your teammates. As well as our regular socials we also hold bigger events which in the past have included Subcrawls, Ceilidhs, 3v3 Tournaments, Pub Golf and Scavenger Hunts! Every year we also host formal events including our Alumni Dinner, inviting previous players for an evening of food, drinks and fun as well as our annual Christmas Dinner.

Welfare

The welfare of our members is the GUWBC’s utmost priority. Our mental health is equally as important as our physical health, and basketball is a great way to keep both in great shape. University can be a stressful time, with academic pressures and strains. As a club we recognise these pressures and strive to support our members in whatever way possible.

Our club strives to promote inclusivity within the community, promoting many social campaigns within the club and on our social media. We partake in many campaigns such as the Rainbow Laces Campaign, promoting visibility for LGBTQ+ people in sport.

We have a designated Welfare Convenor who is contactable at welfare-womensbasketball@gusa.gla.ac.uk.

Insurance

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in. Upon joining, please check the level of insurance cover we, as a club, provide to you.

GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered. Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.

Alumni

We are a club that places a strong emphasis on maintaining a connection with our alumni and keeping them involved in the club beyond their time at university. We host an annual Alumni Dinner, providing an opportunity for former reconnect, catch up with old teammates and stay involved with the wider club community. We also offer opportunities for alumni to support the club through donations, helping us to continue developing our teams, and creating opportunities for current and future players https://givingtoglasgow.hubbub.net/p/sports/pledge/.
