About Us

Glasgow University Fencing Club is one of GU's most successful sports clubs. With a friendly atmosphere and training sessions for all abilities, all are welcome, from beginners to experienced fencers!

We run a range of sessions and cater for fencers of all abilities; those new to the sport can join our beginner's courses to learn the basics of fencing under the supervision of our qualified coaches, and for experienced members we have teams regularly representing the university in BUCS leagues and individual competitions.

Any questions / messages can be directed to our club email or Instagram, found in the Contact Us section of this webpage. All important links to forms and sign-ups can also be found in our club Linktree here.

Teams

We have two open (M1, M2) and and two women's (W1, W2) teams, all competing within the Scottish Conference League. Additionally, there are lots of opportunities throughout the year to compete in both team and individual competitions, with additional beginner-only competitions ran regularly. We also organise trips away to competitions in Scotland and abroad, open to all of our fencers.

Tryouts will be taking place w/b 29th September, with Open Tryouts taking place on Wednesday 1st of October, and Women's Tryouts on Saturday 4th of October, both during open sparring sessions.

Socials

We run regular socials both for GUFC only and jointly with other local clubs, along with a weekly pub trip to Bank Street after Friday training. Socials include Christmas and end-of-year dinners, potlucks and subcrawls, as well as our annual Last Duel event held in the GUU – the location of Scotland's last sword duel in March 1899.

On Thursday 23rd of October, we'll be having our first movie night of the year! Starting at 18:30 in 42 Bute Gardens, room 916, movie will be decided on the night. Snacks strongly encouraged!

Our Halloween social will also be taking place on Thursday 30th of October, where we will be embarking on a pub-golf quest around the West End. With both alcholic and non-alcholic options available at each stop, and challenges to complete along the way, it promises to be a social for the ages. Don't forget to dress up!

Training

Training takes place in the Stevenson Building, in the Activity Hall and Studios 2 & 3. All required specialist equipment is available to borrow from the club for free, you'll only need to bring a sports top, long leggings or tracksuit bottoms, sports shoes and water!
