About Us

Founded in 1869, the Glasgow University Rugby Football Club (GURFC) is one of the university’s oldest student groups.

Established in 1869, the Glasgow University Rugby Football Club is one of the university’s oldest and most successful student organisations — and a founding member of the Scottish Rugby Union. Over the years, GURFC has produced thirteen full internationalists and continues to be a driving force in Scottish student rugby.

Performance Rugby

Our Performance Squad gives talented players the chance to train, compete, and develop at the highest level while earning a world-class degree. Members benefit from:

  • Year-round supervised strength & conditioning with exclusive gym access

  • Video analysis and performance reviews

  • Physiotherapy support and injury management

  • Position-specific coaching and one-to-one sessions with our High Performance Coach

The club fields four BUCS teams and a Saturday team, competing across Scotland’s top university and regional leagues:

  • 1st XV: Premier (North 2); Glasgow Varsity winners at Scotstoun in 2025; Champions of BUCS Scottish 1A 2024–25

  • 2nd XV: BUCS Scottish 2; Scottish Conference Cup winners in 2022-2023

  • 3rd XV: BUCS Scottish 2; after a league win and promotion in 2023–24

  • 4th XV: BUCS Scottish 4; founded in 2025 this is the newest team in the GURFC.

  • Colts: Competing in West Reserve League 2

Recreational Rugby

Our partnership with West of Scotland RFC offers opportunities for non-BUCS players to enjoy competitive yet social rugby. The combined side has made a strong impact in the West Reserve League Division 2, delivering great performances and even better post-match camaraderie.

The Colts embody the club’s inclusive, community-driven ethos — competitive on the field and welcoming off it.

Training

We train at Garscube Sports Complex every Monday and Friday, with the performance group having early-morning S&C sessions before lectures and sessions on Saturday mornings.

Club Life

On and off the field, GURFC is known for its strong sense of community. Our social calendar includes the annual Rugby Ball, Fresher’s Tour, Charity Ceilidh, and Club Dinner, alongside weekly post-match socials at the Glasgow University Union.

We welcome social members and maintain an active alumni network, ensuring that every player and supporter remains part of the GURFC family long after graduation.
