About Us
Founded in 1988, Glasgow University Women’s Rugby Football Club welcomes players of all abilities. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, it’s a great way to get involved in university level sport!
We are always on the lookout for new members and we pride ourselves on being a warm, welcoming, and inclusive club. We have a real mix of playing levels: from international rugby players to complete novices. No previous rugby experience is needed as many of our players had never picked up a ball prior to joining us! With two playing squads, we cater to everyone.
Teams
Our First team competes in BUCS Premier North, the second highest level of university rugby. After an undefeated 2024/25 season in BUCS Scottish Tier 1, our success in promotion playoffs means that our 1XV now competes across Scotland and England. This team plays performance level rugby and focuses on honing technical skills and competitive plays.
Our Second team, grown from a Sunday league development team, competes in BUCS Scottish Tier 2. This team prioritises welcoming new players, building confidence, and developing skills and understanding of the game.
A highlight of the year is our Varsity match against Strathclyde, which is held at Scotstoun Stadium and is watched by over 1000 spectators. GUWRFC are the reigning Varsity champions, winning for three consecutive years!
Socials
When it comes to socials, GUWRFC is truly second to none! Our amazing social secretaries regularly put together themed nights that are always the highlight of the week. From Minions themed subcrawls to a black-tie Christmas dinner, every night out is a good one. We also host joint socials with other sports clubs and more wholesome sober events.
Women’s rugby is a close-knit and supportive environment, both on and off the pitch. Whether we’ve just won big or lost a tough game, there’s always a group down to celebrate, commiserate, or just have a laugh together.
One of the best parts of the year is our annual mystery tour, where we head off to a surprise destination for a week of fun. Previous tours have taken us to places like Malaga, Alicante, and Lisbon. It’s always an unforgettable trip to celebrate the end of the year and wind down post-exams.
At GUWRFC, rugby is just the start - the real value is the lifelong friends and memories you make along the way!
Training
We have two pitch training sessions and two strength and conditioning (S&C) sessions a week. Both the 1XV and 2XV squads comepte on Wednesdays; home at Garscube Sports Complex or away.
Our training times are as follows:
Mondays 5:30 - 7 pm at West of Scotland Rugby Football Club.
Fridays 5 - 7 pm at Garscube Sports Complex - the first half an hour is a video analysis session or team meeting.
S&C times are on Monday's and Friday's 8 - 9 am at Studio 1 in the Stevenson Building. We also have a club physio and offer weekly injury and rehab clinics.
Check the Instragram and join our WhatsApp groupchat for updates as these may be subject to change :)
Joining
Memberships are available either for the full year or on a semesterly basis. Players who wish to compete in BUCS matches with either the 1XV or 2XV will need a competitive membership, which can be purchased annually or just for Semester 1. For those who would prefer to focus on training and socials without competing, we also offer a development membership. This can be upgraded to a competitive membership at any point if you decide you’d like to play in matches. A purely social membership is also available.
New players are encouraged to come along to our taster sessions or trainings before memberships are due, so you can try rugby out first. If you’re joining mid-semester, just send us a message on Instagram and we’ll arrange for you to attend a session before committing to membership.
Insurance
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in. Upon joining, please check the level of insurance cover we, as a club, provide to you.
GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered. Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.
